Dr Margo Barton is Professor of Fashion at the School of Design, Otago Polytechnic. Her research focuses are twofold and often converge as she examines fashion from a design practitioner and from a viewer and wearer's perspective. Firstly, as a designer / maker, her fashion and millinery studio is located in analogue and digital spaces; a hybrid practice of crafting and sketching. Secondly Barton's research explores fashion communication and cross cultural collaboration, including the discourse between the designer and the wearer and the opportunities and challenges that this dialogue promotes. Barton is a member of the executive committee of the International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institutes (IFFTI) and is the deputy chair of the iD Dunedin Fashion Week executive board. She is passionate about providing platforms for emerging fashion designers to have their fashion voices seen, and to this end was instrumental in the development and the ongoing operations of the iD International Emerging Designer Awards, held in Dunedin New Zealand annually since 2005.
